PEO International Peace Scholarship is an initiative aimed at promoting academic opportunities for women. PEO International, nicknamed: Women helping women reach for the stars—offers different need and merit-based scholarships to women whose education has been hindered immensely through lack of financial supports.

PEO International Sisterhood

PEO International Sisterhood currently funds six programs, or projects aim at encouraging women in and off campus to realize their true potentials and achieve their goals.

PEO International Peace Scholarship

The International Peace Scholarship Fund (IPS)—is a program founded and established in 1949—which provides scholarship awards, known as: PEO International Peace Scholarship to women from all part of the world for graduate study in Canada and the United States.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: PEO International Peace Scholarship is awarded based upon specific need; hence, the need for additional source of funding is essential. The International Peace Scholarship Fund (IPS) is particularly not intended to provide full academic and personal funding.

However, according to PEO International Website; applicant are more often than not required to provide proof of other financial sources, that will properly meet her personal and academic expenses.

PEO International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Eligibility Requirements

  • International students attending Cottey College are eligible to apply for a scholarship.
  • Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working only on dissertations are not eligible as first-time applicants.
  • An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.
  • In order to qualify for her first scholarship, an applicant must have a full year of coursework remaining, be enrolled and in residence for the entire school year.
  • A student who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada is not eligible. Note: A student with residency for tax purposes only is permitted.
  • Scholarships are not given for online courses, research, internships or for practical training if not combined with coursework.

IPS Scholarship Value

The International Peace Scholarship (IPS) is not intended to cover all academic and personal expenses of its beneficiaries. Although lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs. But the maximum amount awarded to a student can go up as high as $12,500.

  • Deadline for submitting IPS Eligibility Forms

March 1, 2020

  • Deadline for applicants already enrolled in the graduate program and school for which their scholarship is intended—to submit completed application documents.

April 1, 2020

  • Deadline to submit completed application documents for applicants who will be attending Cottey College.
  • Deadline for applicants not yet enrolled in the graduate program and school for which their scholarship is intended—to submit completed application documents.

PEO Educational Loan Fund

PEO Educational Loan Fund is not a scholarship program. It’s simply a loan provided to qualified women who are passionate about higher education, but not financially buoyant, and need financial assistance.

PEO Educational Loan Fund Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply and receive ELF loan consideration; a woman is expected to:

  • be recommended by a local chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood
  • be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada and resides in the United States or Canada
  • Submits an application within six to 24 months prior to state graduation or course completion date
  • be accepted in an accredited U.S. or Canadian postsecondary institution
  • possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • meets the minimum credit score of 625
  • not exceed the indebtedness limit for her degree level
  • possess two qualified cosigners for the loan
  • be in financial needs assistance.

How to Apply for PEO Educational Loan Fund (ELF)

Follow the PEO Educational Loan Fund application procedures as outline below:-

Follow the Student Application Guide

  • A chapter recommendation must be submitted early enough to allow the student to receive, complete and submit her application to the P.E.O. Executive Office at least six months prior to her graduation or course completion date.
  • An online application will be sent to the student from the P.E.O. Executive Office. When completed, the application file will be released to the trustees for review. The average processing time is eight to 12 weeks, provided all requirements are promptly met.
  • The chapter and student will be notified of the trustees’ decision regarding the loan application.

ELF Loan Value

These are the maximum ELF loan amount you can apply for:-

  • $20,000 for a doctoral degree program
  • $15,000 for a master’s degree program
  • $12,000 for a non-degree accredited program, an associate or bachelor’s degree

PEO Program for Continuing Education

The PEO Program for Continuing Education is a need-based grants aimed at offering a one-time funding for talented women who are passionate about going back to school for the purpose of completing their degree or certification program.

This program is exclusively for women who are legal residents or citizens of Canada or the United States.

PEO Program for Continuing Education Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for recommendation by a local chapter; a woman is expected to:

  • be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada;
  • be enrolled in a certification or degree program;
  • be living and studying in the United States or Canada for the entire course of study;
  • have had at least 24 consecutive months as a non-student sometime in her adult life;
  • be within 24 consecutive months of completing her educational program which, at the conclusion of, will lead to employment or job advancement;
  • complete her program of education within 24 months after the beginning date of the term for which the grant is requested.

Maximum of $3,000 is awarded.

PEO Scholar Awards

The PEO Scholar Awards are one-time merit-based awards offered to women in doctoral-level programs. Its provides financial support for study and research. Theses awards are attainable for women whose citizenship are of Canada or the United States who are pursuing a doctoral level degree an a college or university.

PEO Scholar Awards Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for PEO Scholar Awards.

  • be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada
  • have earned, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree
  • be within two years of graduating from a doctoral program and have at least one full academic year of work remaining in August of the year you are awarded
  • be enrolled in full-time doctoral-level study at an accredited U.S. or Canadian post-secondary institution during the entire academic year of the award

How To Apply for PEO Scholar Awards

  • Nominations of potential Scholars are accepted from PEO chapters between August 20 and November 20 each year.
  • Nominees then have 45 days after their nomination is approved to complete their application.
  • Awards are announced in the spring of each year.

PEO Scholar Awards Value

Maximum of $15,000 is awarded to each student.

PEO STAR Scholarship

The PEO STAR scholarship are offered to impressive senior high school women to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution in Canada or the United States in the next academic year. PEO STAR scholarship is non-renewable, and only for graduating high school senior women.

PEO STAR Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to be recommended for the PEO STAR Scholarship; a woman is expected to:

  • Exhibits excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success
  • Have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Be in the final academic year (senior year) of her secondary education and  is 20 years of age or under at the end of the calendar year
  • Be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada
  • Plan to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the United States or Canada, full-time or part-time, in the fall of the academic year following high school graduation
  • Be recommended by and receives the vote of a local P.E.O. chapter

PEO STAR Scholarship Value

Maximum of $2,500 is awarded to each student.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This scholarship is non-renewable for high school graduating senior women; and must be used in the academic year following graduation, otherwise it will be forfeited.

Cottey College

Cottey College is a fully accredited, and independent college for women; owned/supported by PEO Sisterhood.

Final Thoughts

PEO International Peace Scholarship is clearly impacting on women all around the world. PEO International Sisterhood is proudly funding six projects, which has unarguably provided immense opportunities for women all over the world to study in Canada or the United States.

Well over 100,000 women are direct beneficiaries of the PEO Sisterhood educational loans, awards, grants, and special projects.

The PEO International Peace Scholarship Fund is a program which offers grants-in-aid for selected women from other countries for graduate study in Canada and the United States. If you hold citizenship or permanent residency in the United States or Canada, you are not eligible. Scholarships are not given for research, internships, dissertations or travel.

To be qualified for a first scholarship, you must have a full year of coursework remaining and be enrolled full-time and on campus for the entire school year. PEO International Peace Scholarship do not fund online courses.
